reetings! My name is Adrienne Slater. I would not place myself in the hierarch of visual artists, but by birth right, I am an artist as “life” inspires me.

My pieces vary with many being one-of-a-kind creations. Each piece may consist of acid- free designer paper, paper fabric, mud cloth, batik or colored netting. The switch plates are made of metal and adorned with colored terra cotta clay, metal, wood or ceramic masks and wooden figures. My masks are a collection of ready-made imports from Cameroon, Venice, Ghana and Zaire. The paper is varnished with a clear medium used as a preservative.

I began this project from a simple arts and crafts weekend course while substituting for a friend. The course was designed to give underprivileged children in the Bedford -Stuyvesant community a creative outlet as it relates to visual arts. I found myself inspired to continue creating thereafter. I use several mediums to create three-dimensional art deco light switch covers which I simply titled, “Up Against The Walls”.

What inspires me most about creating these pieces, is that it allows me to express my love and passion for color and to celebrate a rich history of which I am a proud descendant. As an art lover, I truly appreciate the artists’ creative path to bring about beauty, inspiration and celebration. I am thankful and grateful for the response I am receiving from the public as it relates to these one-of-a-kind and unique creations.

Thank you for your support,
Adrienne Slater, Artist
